03/23/2007 - Albuquerque, NM (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - New Mexico has called a news conference for Friday afternoon, at which time Iowa's Steve Alford is expected to be named the head coach of the Lobos.

The Albuquerque Tribune reports Alford will replace Ritchie McKay, whose contract was terminated at the conclusion of the season. The Lobos finished this past season at 15-17, losing their final five games.

Alford compiled a 152-106 record in eight seasons at Iowa. The Hawkeyes were in the NCAA Tournament three times during his tenure, but Iowa ended at 17-14 this season and were eliminated in the quarterfinal round of the Big Ten Tournament.
